Introduction
Lacquers, lotions, trends or
treatment, today's hand and foot care market
provides opportunities galore to care for the extremities that serve us so
well. Not only do our nails, hands, and feet merit attention, after all, they
see us through countless hours of working, walking, running, typing and
texting, but innovative products on the market offer value-added benefits,
including moisturizing, anti-aging formulations, antibacterial protection, and fashionable,
safe, colors and finishes.
According to Euromonitor, the
retail value of the global market for nail products, which includes nailvarnishes, enamels, nail varnish removers, treatments, home manicure products,
including cuticle softeners and nail strengtheners, reached $4.9 billion in 2010, with hand
care products, including hand moisturizers, emollients, and soothers and
hydrators for skin prone to redness, irritation, or eczema, reaching $2.3
billion. Nail products
in the US reached $800 million in retail value, and US hand care products
were valued at $110 million.
Euromonitor notes that nail polish was
the fastest growing category in the sector, registering 8% current value
growth in 2009, an improvement on the 7% growth in the previous year. In
addition, the DIY (do it yourself) trend helped drive 9% value growth in nail care products in 2009. Budget conscious consumers continue
to give themselves manicures and pedicures at home, while nail polishes continue
to benefit from new launches. According to Euromonitor, as a result of the
growth in sales, nail products
also saw a flurry of company activity, with, Coty acquiring the OPI nail polish brand.
The idea of repair and healthy
hands, nails, and feet has also impacted manufacturing today, with an emphasis
placed not only on fashion, but healthy ingredients as well. Prestige or
mass, portability for purse or travel, creams, lotions, or gels, caring for
the skin on hands and feet, as well as the nails themselves, has become as
important, if not more so, than fashion colors on fingertips or toes.
Products today offer repairing, anti-inflammatory properties, revitalizing,
aromatherapy, antioxidant protection, and breakthroughs designed to fade
pigmentation, discoloration, and age spots.

Fusion Brands' Clean™ Anti-Bacterial Moisturizing
Hand Cream
Fusion Brands' Clean™ Bath &
Body Line has just introduced an innovative Anti-Bacterial Moisturizing Hand
Cream with SafetyDerm® Technology. The product is said to deliver up to
four-hour persistence against bacteria, and is both a hand sanitizer and an
intense moisturizer. Fusion Brands, Inc., the creators of the Clean™ Perfume
line, have introduced Clean anti-Bacterial Moisturizing Hand Cream as a new
innovation in the hand sanitizing category.
Fig. 16: Fusion Brands' Anti-Bacterial Moisturizing Hand
Cream
|
The product's SafetyDerm®
technology features Benzethonium Chloride, suspended
in white wax that bonds to the skin to form a protective barrier. The product
has been clinically tested to prevent bacteria from transferring to and from
skin even after contact, helping to reduce germ contamination between regular
hand washing. Unlike alcohol-based hand
sanitizers, which may diminish the skin's natural moisture barrier, the
hydrating properties of this sanitizer-cream hybrid absorbs quickly into the
skin to keep the hand's barrier function intact. The product contains no alcohol, triclosan, sulfates, propylene glycol, mineral oil, artificial
colors or dyes, and contains no animal ingredients or harsh chemicals. Clean
Anti-Bacterial Moisturizing Hand Cream is available in three scents, Clean
Original, Clean Ultimate, and Clean Shower Fresh,
for $18 each.
Coupled with anti-aging,
moisturizing, and protective properties, hand and foot care continues to meld
fashion colors and style, with health care benefits. It remains a category
that is refreshed by innovation, yet relied upon to provide steadfast results
for the digits that do us proud each day.
Clearly, the category's growth,
which Euromonitor confirms has been abetted by the Do It Yourself trend,
category innovation, and new business activity, is an area that remains
simultaneously quotidian and luxurious, owing, as it does, to the importance
placed on extremities that lead us through our daily lives, and add some
color and freshness to every step and gesture. Portable, medicinal, or
spot-on fashion, hand and foot care adds polish to beauty and health regimes,
from tips to toes.
